| News: ISP patrols for bad driving behavior |
|
They will target many of the state and federal highways in East Central Indiana.
MUNCIE -- Even as snow makes the roads treacherous, Indiana State Police want motorists to know that the most common cause of crashes is simply bad driving.
The ISP last week released a list of highways in Delaware, Blackford, Grant, Jay and Randolph counties that they will target under "crash causation factor patrols."
Troopers in marked and unmarked patrol will be looking for speeding, unsafe lane movement and failure to yield right of way.
The targeted roads are:
- Ind. 3, Ind. 18 and Ind. 26 in Blackford County.
- Interstate 69 and the Muncie Bypass in Delaware County.
- Interstate 69 and Ind. 9 and Ind. 26 in Grant County.
- Ind. 67 and U.S. 27 in Jay County.
- Ind. 32 and Ind. 67 in Randolph and Delaware counties.
These highways were identified as problem areas by state police.
"The goal is to reduce the overall number of fatal and personal injury accidents," Sgt. Rod Russell said.
Russell stressed that driving behavior, not road conditions, are often the primary causes in accidents.

Police are responding to the apparent death of a four-month-old child.
Police Radio traffic indicated that detectives and the prosecutor were on the way to the scene.
The yard has been taped off as a crime scene.
There were attempts to revive the child, and then the coroner was called to the home.
UPDATE:
Muncie Police tell 24-Hour News 8 that the death is suspicious because they responded to the death of a two-month-old infant at the same address on Nov. 3, 2009.
According to Sgt. Engle, the woman who lives at that address is a babysitter who works with children through her church, Westminster Presbyterian.
Engle says the investigation into the two-month-old infant’s death determined there was nothing suspicious about the death.

The two returned the next day and were recognized by a clerk, who got a vehicle description and passed it on to police. Police tracked the vehicle to a nearby Mac's on McGalliard Road, where the men were taken into custody.

Patrol officer Jeff Pease was in the neighborhood and found Robbins, who matched the description of the suspect, running toward a house on Lanewood Drive.
The daylight robbery only netted some cash and no one was hurt, but it is the eighth so far this week in a season in which police typically see a spike in robbery.
The suspect said he needed cash to get some property out of the pawn shop, according to police Capt. Mark Vollmar.
